Or rather, What is TiNA?

This is Not Art (TiNA)—one of Australia’s leading emerging arts festivals is celebrating its 21st anniversary over the long weekend, September 27-30.

Newcastle has always been the home of this well-loved festival, which attracts a mix of rising performers, musicians, writers and thinkers from around the country.

If you’ve never been to TiNA before, it’s time to check it out.

The 2018 edition will feature more local artists in the program with a special focus on musicians making waves in the live music scene.

This is Not Art producer Christina Robberds says the festival has its roots in the underground DIY scene of the 90s “This is Not Art was founded by a group of people who wanted to stretch the limits on what Newcastle could achieve as a creative city", continuing with “The group would host raves and events in the old warehouse to fund the next creative project”. Eventually, this led to bigger things with This is Not Art securing the support of Triple J for multiple years and attracting international artists and DJs to the festival.

21 years later the vision of the early days remains.

"We’re proud of our role in launching careers in the creative industries, giving emerging artists their big break and promoting Newcastle as a leader in arts and culture."
