WHETHER YOU AGREE WITH THE RANTS AND RAVINGS ALL OVER SOCIAL MEDIA ABOUT TRIPLE J AND THEIR ‘BIAS’ SOUND, THERE IS NO DENYING THAT 2013 SAW THE RELEASE OF SOME AMAZING MUSIC AND LINED 2014 UP NICELY TO PROVIDE US WITH SOME VERY DIFFERENT SOUNDS AND CULTURAL SHIFTS IN MUSIC AS A WHOLE.WITH THREE OF US IN THE GROUP THERE’S A WIDE AND VARIED TASTE IN MUSIC, SO WHEN THE MIRAGE ASKED US IF WE’D PROVIDE THEM WITH OUR TOP FIVE TUNES OF THE MOMENT WE FIGURED WHAT A WAY TO SHOW SOME OF THE DIFFERENT SOUNDS CURRENTLY OUT THERE AND THE ONES WE’RE REALLY DIGGING AND HOPING TO SEE MORE OF IN THE COMING YEAR.
YAHTZEL × JUNGLE FEELS It’s probably best to start with some home grown, and what better way than with this man. Hailing from Ulludulla a purchase of an 8-track recorder for home production soon progressed to experimentation with synths and classic drums sounds and eventually the production of this summer masterpiece. “This has 100% perfect vibe. The vocals are diced supremely and the track just takes its sweet time, nodding away like it’s on holiday” Dave Ruby Howe (Triple J) We could not have described it better ourselves and even if you’re not liking the “Chillwave” revolution, credit where’s credit’s due. This tune and producer are something everyone should sink their teeth into and keep an eye on in 2014. ANDROMA × GUNJULE “Deep House”, the current tag of the moment, whatever your thoughts on it, this tune is the actual definition of it. “Deep house is know for complex melody, use of unrelated chromatic chords underlying most sequences, and a soulful, ambient, or lounge vibe to the vocals.” - Wikipedia. While we all love this track, Pauly, in his travels of Europe was the one to discover it. Unfortunately because of that any further information would have needed Google translate, a futile task at the best of times. Give it a listen, pure deep house gold. MANSIONAIR × HOLD ME DOWN Catering to our love of Sunday afternoons and extremely chilled out vibes, Mansionair’s “Hold Me Down” ticks all the boxes. The Sydney duo have created something magical with soulful vocals, amazing guitar and eventually an exceptional low end electronic break down that brings Sunday to us on a daily basis. With Lachlan and Alex’s influences listed as people such as: Cashmere Cat, Flume, and Gold Panda, it’s easy to see how these boys have created such an intense emotional soundscape that works so well. Very much looking forward to what these two have to bring us next. KID KAMILLION × LOCO The Diplonimo effect has bought on some exceptional ghetto, booty shaking, twerk music of late and one of our favorites by far is this one. “Don’t you know I’m Loco,” followed by the signature low, low kick and brass jabs, this one has done it so right for an absolutely insane pop, drop and lock session. Recognised by A-Trak for his remix of “Heads Will Roll” which was played by Diplo on BBC Radio 1 puts this guy in our to watch list for the foreseeable future. THOMAS JACK × SYMPHONY (ORIGINAL MIX) Trekking up to Bathurst in March last year for Village Fair, after playing a cheeky song or two, one thing led to another and we found ourselves at the inevitable post work knock off drinks where we randomly got to sit down with Mr Thomas Jack and listen over some of the tunes he’d been working on. At the time the man hadn’t released anything as he felt they all needed just that little bit more work. Well, some of the final products were released, shortly after phone calls were made and tickets to the US were booked for a quick tour. Symphony is one such final product, its description as tropical house is right on the money. There’s no way of explaining it, just give it a listen and you’ll understand why this guy was snapped up so quickly to head overseas. Recently back from his little excursion we expect to see even bigger things from this guy in 2014. The #[Hashtag] Lads
