Top 5 Gigs to go to this week, by Brooke Tunbridge / by Brooke Tunbridge

Plenty of awesome shows this week. We’ve narrowed it down to our top 5:

Mar Haze w/ Byren + Voodoo Youth + Buoy + Oh Buoy
If you’re yet to make it out to an instalment of Thursday Night Live, that needs to change. Free entry, cheap drinks and some great emerging bands.

When: Thursday 16th February
Where: The Cambridge Hotel
Tickets: FREE entry between 9-10pm. After: $5 for students or $10 for non-students

The Treehouse Children EP Listening Party
Technically not a gig but still worth mentioning. It’s on the same night as Thursday Night Live but the times don’t clash so you can have the best of both worlds. The Edwards Shop is playing host with a listening party for Treehouse’s Debut EP Please, a night before it’s released into the world.

When: Thursday 16th February 6-8pm
Where: The Edwards Shop
Tickets: FREE entry. Leaving you money to buy their EP and/or a new record.

Mountain Sounds Festival
Get there early for Vacations and Raave Tapes if you’ve got your hands on a ticket. Also don’t miss The Gooch Palms and Bec Sandridge (who just announced that she’s supporting Tegan & Sara on their Australian tour).  Don’t miss anyone, they’re all good bands. Clone yourself if you have to.

When: Saturday 18th February
Where: Mt Penang Parklands
Tickets: SOLD OUT

Wil Wagner w/ Laura Stevenson + Lucy Wilson + Iona Cairns
The Smith Street Band’s lead man and one of my favourite music making humans. A solo set that I have been looking forward to since it was announced. Listen closely to his lyrics and don’t be a dick at the show because if you are he will probably call you out for it. The tour’s presented by Pool House Records which TSSB recently launched and is something you should check out if you haven’t already. If you’re feeling lucky head to The Small Ballroom’s Facebook for the chance to win tickets.

When: Friday 17th February
Where: The Small Ballroom
Tickets: Oztix

Jess Locke w/ Shiny Coin + Hey Lady!
If you’ve heard The Smith Street Band’s new track “Birthdays” you would have heard Jess Locke’s vocals accompanying Wil. I caught her when she was supporting The Smith Street Band and I remember falling in love with her music. You might feel the same way so be sure to head along.

When: Sunday 19th February
Where: Hamilton Station Hotel
Tickets: FREE
