60 seconds with... James Bennett by Kian West

james-Bennett-4_greyIN A PREVIOUS INTRODUCTION FOR THIS MONTH'S MIRAGE, I MENTIONED GETTING AROUND THE OLIVE TREE MARKETS AND STUFFING MY FACE WITH DONUTS. THE ONE FACTOR THAT I DON'T FEEL ASHAMED ABOUT ON THAT DAY IS THE DELICIOUS TUNES ENTERING MY EAR-DRUMS VIA A YOUNG SONGWRITER FROM PORT MACQUARIE. NOW WITH A MOVE TO NEWCASTLE IN THE NEAR  FUTURE, WE THOUGHT WE SHOULD HIGHLIGHT WHAT IT IS THAT OUR COVER BOY DOES.

So James, tell us a little about yourself? I’m 24 years old, & was born in Byron Bay (at a very young age). I’ve been playing music professionally for 3 years, though I’ve always played around on the guitar with my own songs and random covers for as long as I can remember.

james-Bennett-1_grey I’ve caught you a couple of times at the Olive Tree markets, but for those who haven’t heard you, how would you describe your music? I would describe my music as Rootsy Folk, my best description for this when I tell people normally “just think of a cross between John Butler and Bob Dylan”. I have a huge list of people who influence my music and not just other musicians.

You have a few CDs available, where can people get them? Any new music on the horizion? I have 2 EP’s and a single. All my music is available on iTunes and hard copies are available at any of my gigs, or from my website – jamesbennettmusic.com. I’ve just completed recording for my first album, it just needs some finishing touches and I’m looking to release it later this year or early next year. I am forever writing new music, it’s very addictive to me. I’ve always been that way. I think I’ve written over 100 songs, and it’s a shame that some of them will probably never be recorded as I tend to fall in love with my newer stuff all the time, and the old stuff gets put aside.

Is there any important dates coming up in the rest of this year? My website is updated twice monthly with upcoming gigs. I usually play at least 2 gigs a week. I’ve also got 2 great festivals coming up.. WILDWOOD – Sunday 5th of October in Port Macquarie and LAKESIDE – Saturday 1st of November in Tuncurry.

james-Bennett-2_greyYou have mentioned about moving from Port Macquarie to Newcastle, why the move? I will be moving to Newcastle next year to be closer to Sydney, but not in Sydney. There’s a lot more going on musically south of Port Macquarie than north. I have family in Port, Forster and Sydney so I’ve got more than enough “halfway houses”. I’ve had a great response from the people of Newcastle every time I’ve been there so it seems like the perfect location to base myself.

INTRO - SEPTEMBER by Kian West

Spring is just kicking in and just like the birds and the bees, Newcastle Mirage is all a flutter with action and activities like banging out this pounding sounding mammoth edition. We are uber impressed by the whole thing and we think you will be too. sticker teal_200 Make sure you check out all of it, a special highlight mention to ‘What’s in Your Glass?” and their amazing event coming up this month. We will be there and we think you should as well.

Normally I’d harp on about all the killer content inside the rest of the mag but I think you have the idea, it’s big, it keeps getting bigger and October is going to be absolutely Gigantic. For the first time we are going to be printing in colour. Not all the copies, just those for subscribers, so make sure you have a subscription or buy a one off “October Edition” off our website www.newcastlemirage.com before October to secure a copy. Everyone else is going to get a coloured cover. It’ll still be great, it’ll still be limited edition (like everything we do) but it won’t be SUPER LIMITED EDITION!!!

PS. We just ordered some limited edition Pens (did I mention we love limited edition?) and they are going out to subscribers in October… What more could you want/need?

Hmmmm

Happy September

Just Another Tuesday 260814 #Blogtribe by Kian West

For those of you playing at home, I write the "Intro" section every month for Newcastle Mirage and have always tried to emulate the Editor sections of other magazines I really enjoy. An inspiring piece that also somehow connects with the articles inside. A sort of cohesive glue to the rest of the zine... Inside the August Intro I mentioned I'd write every week for the month and if people liked it I'd continue. Well, I failed.

I failed miserably and didn't write all month. In my defence, after I wrote that I realised I hadn't really planned any further than that. It seems simple enough at face value, write something every week. But What? And When? So it has taken me a month to work out the When part and oddly enough that seemed more important than the What because without consistency it really doesn't matter what it is about. So in light of all this, inspiration grabbed me this week. I have been following The Blog Society for a few months now and trying to get a feel for what other Bloggers are writing about. Most are women that I could find, a lot are themed around cooking, fashion, decorating or craft, entertaining children and similar. But that doesn't help me. We write a monthly Art & Culture Zine that is focused on the WHO of Newcastle...

But then, you suddenly think, maybe people want to hear what is going on behind the scenes? Every week we meet with people as the project of Mirage develops, contacts are formed and events are happening and so I am really asking...

Does this sound interesting?

  1. Like for instance, I met with Jon from the Hunter Business Chamber last week about becoming a member and also to start gaining some business insight, maybe a mentor, to help assist the growth of us as well as myself.... Would you like to hear about that?
  2. I also visited a Poetry Slam. I've never visited a Slam before and was completely blown away... What about that?
  3. At the same time I've had Ryan on the case to develop layers of our logo and cutting out a stencil for some limited Edition Tote Bags... Would you enjoy hearing/seeing this project?

So, I'm asking you to pick 1, 2 or 3 and I'll elaborate on this before the weekend... But in future I'm planning to write something for every Tuesday and if I don't get any feedback I'll just keep on writing random stories... it is much more fun together though.
