SO MUCH MUSIC - December, by Chris Dunn / by Newcastle Discovered

Newcastle outfit Muzzy Pep have re-emerged in the Newcastle live scene with a new album in tow entitled ‘Cyclic’. The Newcastle/Maitland outfit rose to prominence in the late 90’s, winning the Newcastle leg of the first triple j Unearthed competition, and seemed to be on the brink of stardom. The band stayed quiet in the 2000’s, and while Errol and Scott both had solo outings - it was still something special when they joined forces.

This songwriting duo wrote some of the best Indie Pop songs to come out of Australia, and it’s honestly a crime that more people do not acknowledge how much of an important band they were. Luckily, the band are now back in action; supporting Custard, and getting a few shows under their belt at LazyBones in Marrickville and The Junkyard in Maitland. Keep your ear to the ground for more shows, you won’t regret it.

Local Psych lords Zappo have released their wonderful album ‘Rainbow Daze’ on vinyl. While the band sadly broke up in August, members will no doubt be taking these folk/rock inspired sounds to new levels in other projects. The album has been released on clear lathe-cut vinyl, with only 30 copies available - it may just be a Newy collectable in the future.
‘Rainbow Daze’ is a record that could have been put together in 1969! I can just imagine Zappo sharing the stage with Tamam Shud at The Caves Beach Hotel, and no one in the crowd would have known they’re actually from the future! Music like this takes me back to when I was nine years old.
Stepping away from music for a moment; Quinn Squires is a local artist who creates wonderful political art under the name Real Salad. He started out creating drawings and sticker packs, and now he has branched out into making patches. They’re wonderful and come with a great little poster to stick to your wall, after you sow the patches on your denim jacket.

Now that we are at the tail end of the year, it’s been great to look back at all the amazing local releases that have come out this year. We proudly support local music, and it’s been an honour to stock vinyl releases from acts like Rachel Maria Cox, William John Jr, Voodoo Youth, Paper Thin, Tired Minds, Ben Leece, and East Coast Low. Here’s to even more in 2018!
