Here at Mirage we are always stoked to hear about fellow Novocastrians doing amazing stuff. When we heard Alex Nicolaidis had been announced as a finalist of the Australian Small Business Champion Awards for the category of New Business we had to find out, well, what exactly that all means...
Tell us a little bit about Booksmart accounting and what you do differently…
Alex: Booksmart offers a bookkeeping service undertaken by people who have personalities, knowledge, and hands on experience, not just qualified professionals. Booksmart services clients around Australia offering bookkeeping, payroll, BAS preparation and lodgement, reporting, Xero training and a marketing and business coaching service. We offer either an in-house approach (onsite) or we can work from our office (remotely). The team at Booksmart are young, fun, quirky and get the job done. Their office is the same; a modern spacious workplace in a professional business hub in the heart of Newcastle.
Massive news just being finalists in the Australian Small Business Champion Awards for the category of New Business, how does it feel?
A: Wow! I am so excited and truly honoured to be recognised in these awards. When Booksmart won the Local Business Awards and Hunter Region Business Excellence Awards in 2016, I was proud of how far the business and team had come in such a short time however now to be announced as a finalist in the Australian Small Business Champion awards is just an outstanding achievement. We can’t wait to be on the red carpet and hopefully bring the award back to Newcastle!
When you aren’t playing with numbers, what do you like to do in Newcastle?
A: On the weekends I love to enjoy the beautiful beaches and landscape of Newcastle. You will find me walking the Anzac memorial walk most weekends. To keep me fresh and bright in the office I get up before the sun every morning and head to the gym at F45 Gateshead. I love keeping healthy and fit and the team there as well as at ASN Charlestown help keep me in line! My next love is food, we have some awesome restaurants and cafes in Newcastle, I enjoy catching up with friends whilst checking out the new venues around Newcastle.
You were previously on the Hunter Young Professionals board, can you tell us a little bit about your time?
A: My time with HYP was great. It was good to be exposed to people outside of my industry on a regular basis. It was a really collaborative space to be in, being around and involved with such an in depth group of creative people was fantastic. It helped me to create and grow my creative side to enhance my business.
Any hot tips for us?
A: My life motto is “Your comfort zone is a beautiful place but nothing ever grows there.” This sums up my message to all. Whatever your dream is, back yourself, give it a go, work hard and continue to challenge yourself. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals and remember to have fun and love what you do.
