RARA REVIEWS: Espresso Martini / by Kian West

Espresso Martini

At this time of year there is not much motivation to party, unless you’re in Europe – and if you are, I don’t want to hear about it, there’s too much FOMO. For most of us it’s dark and dreary by the time we step out of work and any inclination to head back out is gone when Netflix asks, ‘Are you still watching?’ Fuck that, there’s still fun to be had, and my solution has been a post-work espresso martini. Newcastle loves coffee, Newcastle loves a drink – is it even worth asking what our favourite cocktail is? Thankfully, essentially every bar caters to our needs. Here’s where you can find the best.

5 Sawyers
I love Sawyers on a Friday; it’s an intimate and fun vibe. Their cocktail list is a treasure trove. They have six varieties of espresso martinis on offer. All feature 45ml of the good stuff. I’ve tried them all – how else could I tell you which one is the best? It’s the ‘De Lish’, by the way: a beautifully balanced combination of vanilla-infused vodka, white crème de cacao, coffee and Kahlua.

Customs House
f you come through on a Friday between 5-7pm, you can cop an espresso martini for $5. I didn’t stutter – that’s the same price as the one you order in the morning, but with a little extra somethin’. For that price it almost doesn’t matter what it tastes like, but luckily Customs have got it on lock; it’s delicious. Careful though, they go down easily.
