Native Newcastle: a tour, by Brooke Tunbridge / by Brooke Tunbridge

I was lucky enough to join one of Native Newcastle’s see and do tours around the town last week, visiting the iconic landmarks and hidden treasures Newcastle offers. Ran by Dan and Heidi, long time locals, Native Newcastle combine their passion for travelling and their love of Newcastle, into creating small tours to their favourite spots around town. The tours are personal and the itinerary is created to suit the group, unlike the structured big tourist bus tours. You’re able to be shown around by locals, to spots that they themselves frequent.

We were driven around in a comfortable air conditioned leather interior 4WD and given plenty of chances to stretch our legs and explore. By talking with Dan, it became clear that they cater for everyone, altering the stops to suit the group (different fitness levels, ages, interests, etc). They explain the see and do tour as a time to “swim, walk, inhale, feel, touch, interact, eat, drink and absorb the Newcastle lifestyle”. Dan took the group to a range of beautiful places in Newcastle, informing us of the rich history that is attached to the sites and allowing us the opportunity to ask questions and explore for ourselves.

It’s always best to be shown around by a local, even if I was being a tourist in my own town.

Native Newcastle is something I will recommend to visitors for them to experience Newcastle as we do!
