Local artist Matt Cross will be gracing the stage at NIMA's weekly event at The Grand Hotel (down in the Underground) this coming Tuesday from 8pm. With this in mind, we reached out to find out what everyone should expect on the night...
Tell us a little bit about the band?
Matt: The band is a little bit of a throw together for this particular gig coming up. It will consist of Brennan Fell on bass, Matt Thomas on drums, Jack Hayden on guitar, and myself on piano. The night will also feature a couple of guest vocalists which I am excited about.
When did you start playing together? Have you been in groups before?
M: We all met at uni where we studied a bachelor of music. Since then, a few of us play together in different projects and ensembles, however this is the first time all four of us have played together in this environment. I’m quite lucky to know great musicians who are eager to play, and are quite often sight reading.
Who are your influences?
M: They change all the time. From Billy Joel to Vulfpeck. From Ben Folds to Sinatra. I just love music and am always listening to different genres.
Have you got any local favourite artists?
M: I’ll often try and go see Adam Miller perform. Terence Koo always puts on a good show. And so do the young guys from Pozkah.
There is a show coming up?
M: We are playing at the Underground on the 30th of May. Doors open at 7.30pm!
What should people expect?
M: I don’t want people to expect a show of just jazz. Or of just funk. We plan to strategically manufacture a set that consists of originals, covers, instrumentals, vocals, all with a simple purpose - to entertain.
What is next?
M: Watch this space. And also watch my Facebook page. All upcoming gigs will be posted there.
So come along to the next NIMA event and every Tuesday there after.
