INFLUENCE-HERS: Botanica Bird // Rachael Cullen, By Kian / by Kian West

Presenting a balanced representation of Newcastle has always been really important to us at Mirage. We don’t always hit the mark, but in 2018 we want to make sure that there is an added focus on local women doing incredible stuff. We are hunting down some of the biggest ‘influence-hers’ in our city – women crushing goals in whatever field they’re in. To kick the year off, I asked a few Boss Babes about what they’re doing.

Name:  Rachael Cullen

Role/Business: Florist / Botanica Bird

Why do you do it? What drives you?
For the joy and satisfaction I get when I encourage people to view flowers or a flower in a new light via colour combinations, mix-matching textures and pairing flowers that aren't traditionally paired.

The best advice you’ve ever been given?
A person who feels appreciated will always do more than what is expected.

Favourite place/space in Newcastle?
Awabakal Nature Reserve – it has all the good stuff. Wildflowers, bush walks, wild salty air and ocean views.

What do you wish you learnt earlier?
As a woman I define femininity, femininity doesn't define me.

Who inspires you?
My nephews and niece. They are five years and younger but their raw emotions, conversations and energy ground me and inspire me to be me.

When you aren’t working, what do you most love to do?
I’m rarely not playing with flowers. But when I stop I like to go out for coffee, go on hikes, go to gigs, and have a beer or three at pubs/small bars around town with family and friends.
