FRITZ, by Kian West / by Kian West

IT IS SO EXCITING HEARING FROM YOUNG ARTISTS GETTING STARTED ON THE SCENE. WE CAN’T WAIT TO WATCH FRITZ PLAY AT THE CAMBRIDGE HOTEL ON JUNE 22ND SO WE HAD TO HEAR A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HER AHEAD OF THE SHOW…

FRITZ aka MATILDA MURPHY

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m a solo artist making songs at home, pretending I’m in a real band haha. My name is Tilly, but I call my music FRITZ. I’m 17 years old.

When did you start playing?

I started playing guitar when I was 13, and with that came writing my own songs. But it wasn’t until very recently, it seems, that I began recording the songs I wrote (this was when I discovered how to). Then came my self-titled debut album! I haven’t been in a band before, but after I finish school I am keen on forming a band for FRITZ because sometimes backing tracks can be a pain when performing. For now, it’s what works for me.

Who are your influences?

I’m heavily influenced by the noise pop/shoegaze scene of the 80’s and 90’s. Bands of that scene inspired me to write my own fuzzy pop songs. Also, individual female artists like Bjork, SOKO and Kathleen Hanna inspire me because of their music, but also because of their attitude towards music and how they create it.

Do you have any favorite local artists?

Heaps! Two of my good friends, Jack Kearny and Thomas Harrison, have formed a new band called Aurora Borealis. They’ve released a couple of tunes and they’re sounding so good. Some other favorites would be Oilbaron, shysters and e4444e, just to name a few!

There is a show coming up?

I’ve got a couple coming up fairly soon! Wicking Out! Festival in Wickham on June 10th. Later on is the Cambridge Hotel on June 22nd as well as an unannounced show sandwiched in between some of those dates, but all will be revealed soon.

What should people expect?

A show full of warmth and fuzziness, and maybe a funny costume, if you’re lucky. Everything may seem disorganised, but let’s pretend that’s all part of the FRITZ package.

What is next?

I’ve put a bit of a hold on my music making at the moment as I’m occupied with completing my HSC. Although I have written some songs, I just haven’t recorded them yet. But a new EP will be coming at the end of this year more than likely. I’m hoping to make a couple of music videos too! FRITZ will get much more exciting once school is out of the way, that’s for sure.

Catch FRITZ live at our TNL Collab event with Love+Rent on June 22nd from 9pm.
