The Pacific Street building was built in 1911, club members handing the site over for use as a nurses’ home during World War I.
Locals Alida and Brien Cornwell bought it in 1997 to renovate the building for backpackers. The backpackers accommodation is now under new ownership as of last year, and continues to host travellers from around the globe.
While there have been adjustments to the building, the heritage remains.
Have you stayed at the backpackers? Or know the building from its days before accommodation? Perhaps you danced in the ballroom that's now a common room. Share your photos and memories in the comments!
