Reigning from Tamworth, this country-side sweetheart, sure knows how to make an impression wherever she goes. Having tore down the competition in music during the HSC in 2015, Sophia Berlyn went on to bring her music to Newcastle and wow crowds. Receiving accolades with the Tip Jar Song Competition and creating a name for herself in Newcastle - Sophia now brings her original scores to Darby Street Live in a set that will stripped back and unmissable.
As a stripped back performer, Sophia is someone who you’ll most likely find in amongst nature, playing her original songs, pen in hand and strumming away - reminding me of an early Taylor Swift. I mean, the picture at the top of this post looks very Taylor Swift 2008. Don't ya think?
Similarly to Tay Tay, this young lady is strumming her own chords and writing her own lyrics, which grapple modern day anomalies, romances and the every-day ups and downs.
Still being quite new to music scene, Sophia Berlyn is continually experimenting with her sound and finding unique and interesting ways to further captivate audiences with her music and performances. Having owned a loop pedal, we may even see this young artist one day perform in arenas like good ol’ Ed Sheeran, and become her own one-woman show - who knows?
Performing on the 'Not Just Grrrls' stage outside the funky boutique store, Ramjet, alongside fellow performers, Bravo Victor, you will find Sophia performing some original songs that showcase her thoughtful and inspired take on music and on life. A refreshing sound to add to your Saturday afternoon. Who'd want pass up on that?
I got the awesome opportunity to speak to the lovely lady ahead of the big day, where we got to chat all about what is great about Newcastle, how she'd describe her sound and what to expect from her performance at Darby Street Live.
Full interview can be found below...
How would you describe your music?
Probably as singer-songwriter with alternative pop vibes. I am always in the process of finding my sound though - so it varies a little from song to song!
What can people expect from your performance at Darby Street Live?
Some chill vibes to sit back and enjoy - me, my guitar and some thoughtful lyrics.
Who’s your favourite local music artist & why?
Rachel Maria Cox - she is just so full of energy whenever she performs, solo or with a band; and her lyrics are so honest - I love that.
What do you love about Newy’s music scene?
That there are just so many opportunities for local artists to perform.
The scene is so welcoming and that makes it so much easier for up-and-coming musicians to get a feel for the scene and get involved - there is so much talent going around too.
What is your favourite thing about Newy - what would you recommend to the tourists out there?
Definitely the beaches, the scenery - I’m a sucker for nature though! 🍃🌊
When and where can we catch you for Darby Street Live?
