CREATIVE WRITING, w/ Keegan Evans / by Kian West

Our newest intern is all about creative writing, so we thought we’d introduce him and give you all the chance to submit your ideas…

1. Tell us a little about yourself, Keegan...

My name is Keegan Evans and I'm your everyday local menace to society. I'm very interested in writing, art, patterned shirts, comedy and global politics. I've been a child of this blessed city since day one.

2. Why do you write?

The biggest reason I suppose would be my fear of forgetting ideas I’ve somehow convinced myself are important. That or a desire to leave behind some extension of my conscious process to outlive me, even if it goes unread or unseen, in the hopes of cheating my own mortality.

3. Who inspires you?

Too many people really. As a writer: Cormac McCarthy, Hunter S. Thompson, John Steinbeck, Kurt Vonnegut, Antoine De Saint-Exupéry, Alan Moore and countless others. When reading the works of exceptional writers I feel inspired to write. The same could be said for my art inspiration.

4. Where in Newcastle do you like to hang out?

I like to mix it up with Newcastle. Skating Nobbys breakwall, Hunter Street Mall, Darby Street for lunch, eating hot chips on the foreshore, Newcastle Art Gallery or exploring and swimming at any one of our beautiful beaches.

5. Biggest goal for 2017?

To not end up in Guantanamo Bay or some CIA black-site because of the crappy photoshop I did of Trump for my Facebook cover photo. (Waterboarding at Guantanamo Bay sounds really fun if you don't know what either concept is.) That or publish a book of my short stories while attending uni. I would also love to print some of my artworks onto clothes and maybe start up a small independent fashion label, but we'll see what the future holds.

If you are a creative (fiction) writer, we want your short stories! Send them to info@newcastlemirage.com and we’ll have Keegan contact you. Guidelines can be found at www.newcastlemirage.com/creativewriting.
