Richard Keane, a firefighter, and his wife and co-founder, Ursula Keane, a student of Biology and Environmental Science, met on a beach in Portugal in 2009 and married the following year. Combining their skills and passions, they have set up a compassionate and eco-friendly enterprise in memory of Richard’s sister, Dr. Tanya, who tragically, took her own life in 2013.

“You can’t describe the shock and the desperation you feel when you lose a beloved sibling to suicide,” Richard Keane, said. “Ursula and I just wanted to make sure Tanya left a legacy. She adored animals and was passionate about the environment. After Tanya’s death, helping animals made us feel closer to her. We wanted something that would be ongoing and not just a one-off fundraiser. Now, through Choose Your Animal, we help numerous animal charities and we are in it for the long-term”.

One of the challenges the husband and wife team faced was finding suitable eco- friendly fabric. The Choose Your Animal brand is an environmental champion. Their stunning prints feature on stunning fabric made from recycled plastic bottles (RPET).

“By September 2016, we knew we had something very special to share with the planet,” reflected, Ursula. “With every step we take, we’ve been mindful of Tanya’s essence and her caring temperament.”

Ursula Keane describes their ‘tribe’ as “Animal and nature lovers. Our customers live a healthy lifestyle, enjoy yoga, the outdoors, and are avid beach goers. They also make conscious purchasing decisions. This is our chance to do something positive for the earth and future generations in Tanya's name. It feels great to give consumers the choice to wear something that really makes a difference".

From its headquarters in the coastal city of Newcastle, New South Wales, Choose Your Animal has customers based in Australia, Canada, and Austria.
