Chesters, A Pet Bakery making a difference / by Kian West

On Saturday we heard how Chesters Pet Bakery had held a fundraising day for the Leukaemia Foundation and spotted so many gorgeous photos of happy dogs with fur coloured and nails painted, or generally just being pampered, so we had a quick chat with Chesters owner Kendall Richards about why and what Chesters is all about...

Kendall, Chesters Pet Bakery has been open for a while now, for people that still haven’t visited, what do you have inside?
Kendall: Inside Chester's Pet Bakery we have a range of pet treats. We have a fridge full of handmade dog treats that vary each week. They are all made in store by myself so I can ensure the ingredients are nutritious for dogs. We modify all the ingredients to be dog friendly, for example we use carob instead of chocolate, yoghurt instead of icing, olive oil instead of butter etc. We also make to order birthday cakes and birthday biscuits for dogs. In our freezer we have meals also hand made by myself that can be used in addition to your dogs normal biscuits or kibble. The range of frozen meals include chicken risotto, turkey meatballs and kangaroo stir fry.
We also have a range of dried treats for cats, dogs, rabbits, horses and birds. They are all Australian products guaranteed!
We also sell a range of toys, collars, leads, beds, and grooming products and clothing including fleecy coats and water proof jackets and the occasional tutu!! Also we have a range of giftware for animal lovers!

You obviously love animals, where did it all begin?
K: My mother will tell you I was born with a love for animals. My first word was "dog"! I have always wanted to save any animal and "nagged" for many pets! My first pet was a Labrador, Jessie who we lost about 5 years ago and my second one was Chester! Chester is a shitzu cross who I bought on my 16th birthday with my birthday money! Chester was very important to me, and still is, as he has helped me through some tough, emotional times. I started training to be a Vet nurse and in the course they talk about what is put in shop bought pet food so with this knowledge I started to make Chester's food myself. Family and friends also started wanting my handmade food so this is how the business began!
At present I have 4 chickens, 2 goats, one sheep, a miniature horse , 3 dogs and 2 cats! My other two dogs are both rescue dogs and the cats were dumped on the door of the vet clinic where I worked! The rooster we own was rescued as a chick with a broken leg which I fixed with a cast of a drinking straw.

So you are raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation, why is that so important to you?
K: In November last year my father was diagnosed with Leukaemia. He went to the doctor with a virus and within a week he was in hospital with Leukaemia. The leukaemia cells had been discovered in his spine and his brain so he began intensive chemotherapy straight away. He is now on drug therapy for the rest of his life with a drug that targets and kills leukaemia cells as they develop. The researchers that have developed this drug have saved his life! Up until now, I have only been passionate about animal welfare but seeing the impact that charities like the Leukaemia Foundation have on cancer patients and their families has made me realise their importance and I wanted to help by uniting my passion for animals with the World's Greatest Shave fundraiser.

How can people help the cause?
K: We had a fundraising day in store last Saturday with fur colouring, paw nail painting, people hair colouring, a sausage sizzle and raffles. The raffle prizes were donated by amazing local businesses in Lake Village Arcade as well as the pet wholesalers of Dogue and Doog!! The raffle isn't drawn until the 31st March so please come and buy raffle tickets. We have a $250 voucher for one class per week for one term from the Pilates Barre, Warners Bay, a $50 Table 1 expresso voucher, a $50 Katwalk voucher, a hair treatment and blow wave voucher from CC Hair, a paw print bracelet from Kadia Jewellery, a luxurious candle from Warners Bay florist , and a voucher from the Dog House Groomer at Lambton and Dogue and Doog dog products. We also have colourful bow ties, bandannas and a table of gift packs for sale with all proceeds to The Leukaemia Foundation.

Who should come and visit Chesters Pet Bakery?
