BANDAPALOOZA: chatting with Zac Rushbrook, by Ryan / by Ryan Williams

I see Spencer Scott sometimes on Twitter – he is forever tweeting on and on about how Newcastle is the live music capital of Australia. On and on and on he goes. Anyway, I guess he’s right. Steel City Music have announced a massive line up at the Lass – Bandapalooza it’s called. Saturday June 10. I had a chat to Zac Rushbrook to find out more about the whole thing.

What is Bandapalooza?

Bandapalooza is a Newcastle based music event put together by Zac Rushbrook from Steel City Music. Bandapalooza is an event that was put together with the goal of showcasing some of the east coasts of NSWs finest bands.

Should people come?

If you enjoy having a bad time and hate high-quality music, this probably isn’t the event for you. Otherwise, you should definitely come down, plus if you’re one of the first 100 people through the door. You get one free tin of Murrays East Coast Lager. Which will only be $5 dollars each for the duration of the event. We’ll have some photographers there on the day and some people filming a vid also.

Who is playing?

We’ve got nine bands in that of Bin Juice, The Treehouse Children, Cosmic Spice, Stranger Then Friends, Nelipot, Southern End, Arcades And Lions, Sister Rosicky and Oilbaron. A whole bunch of buskers for the beer garden as well.

Where is it?

The bread and butter of the Newcastle music scene, The Lass O’gowrie hotel. Such an awesome venue, who have forever been pushing live music in the city and giving promoters and performers alike a chance to do their thing.

Are there markets as well?

We have one market stall, which will be raising money for the amazing Students of Sustainability conference that’s going down in Newcastle very soon. A whole bunch of other whacky wonderful things will be going on in that of the live art from Corin Corcoran, Alexander Wright, Shahn Lane and 80n20 they will be selling raffle tickets so get some for your chance to pick up what will no doubt be a breathtaking piece of art. All of these artists are truly amazing. Then we have a whole bunch of buskers who are going to come down throughout the day and please your ears in between the sets, people like Haley Papasavvas from The Fux and The Sound, Dominique Quayle and Tarrant Thomas from Wilson and The Castaways, Megan Core, Myself and a few others. So come down and throw a few dollars around for your outdoor entertainers on the day!

Are there many more gigs like this for Steel City Music coming up?

100% baby, I plan to be doing at least four Bandapalooza events a year and plan to continually put on other events for Australian talent. Plus I have a VERY BIG event planned for spring this year that a friend and I have laid the groundwork for. Keep your eyes peeled.

All of this for $5, damn right all of this for $5
