So Abby, tell us a little bit about yourself…

A little about me, argh! Where do I start! I have lived in Newcastle since birth and have recently started exploring other countries which has made me in turn thankful I have been fortunate enough to live in such an amazing part of the world. I have worked in a few hospitality ventures in Newcastle my favourites being ‘One Penny Black’ where my love and knowledge for strong well crafted coffee emerged. Also the late restaurant ‘Bacchus’ on Hunter street transformed me into a little food lover and I have never looked back. I have always felt inclined to support local businesses and enjoy creating positive experiences through hospitality.

Newcastle Mirage have long been fans of Char’s Café, for those that don’t know, can you tell people where it is and a little bit about the café?

Char’s café is located on 82-84 Belford st (Nineways) We are currently trading Monday to Fridays 8am till 3pm where you can expect great quality organic coffee, sweet house baked treats (gluten free and vegan options) Fantastic Baked Uprising Sourdough Toasties. Seasonal Salads and tasty meals which are available for take away if just popping in on your lunch break. We also have house made pies!

There is something pretty unique about Char’s isn’t there?

Char’s is an opportunity for some hands on hospitality training for a number of people with disabilities. The café creates a supported training environment that provides hospitality and general employability skills development for those involved. The outcomes for the individuals include enhanced confidence, community interaction, social engagement, and of course further employment opportunities.
