IN NEWCASTLE THERE ARE PLENTY OF PLACES YOU CAN GO TO DRINK BEER AND TALK ALL ABOUT HOW GREAT IT IS, SOMETIMES IT CAN EVEN BE PART OF AN EVENT, BUT THERE AREN’T SO MANY PLACES TO TALK ABOUT WINE. SURE, YOU COULD TRAVEL ALL THE WAY UP TO THE HUNTER VALLEY WINE COUNTRY, BUT WHAT IF YOU WANT TO STAY A LITTLE CLOSER TO THE 2300? THE WINE IDEALISTS HAVE YOU COVERED AND WE GOT TO CHAT WITH DANIEL AHEAD OF THEIR SEPTEMBER EVENT!
So Daniel, tell us a little bit about yourself and ‘What’s In Your Glass?’ First.. ?
I'm Newcastle boy, freelance wine writer and creator of What's In Your Glass? I'm also known as The Wine Idealist, and I run a website/blog (thewineidealist.com) that aims to narrate the changing shift of Australian and New Zealand wines through weekly articles and interviews with winegrowers from right across these two countries. What's In Your Glass? is a wine festival, which is on again this year, and is presented by inGRAPESweTRUST, which is a small wine crew established by myself and Andrew Clifton-Smith from Fortunate Son, We're all about showcasing good wine in Newcastle, and to eat, drink and be merry!
What’s this event in September all about?
Wine, food and good times... What's In Your Glass? is Newcastle's own artisan wine fair that aims to bring the best of natural, organic and biodynamic wines from around Australia and New Zealand and show people how awesome wine can be, when it's about sustainable vineyard management, craftsmanship in winemaking, and good times, rather than conventional chemical agriculture, industrial winemaking, and snobbishness! We've got four of Newcastle's best restaurants setting up pop-up style kitchens - Subo, Reserve, Casa de Loco, Fortunate Son - and they'll be serving some pretty tasty gourmet food for people to chow down on! Plus, we've got a cool blues band lined up to provide a solid atmosphere for your Sunday arvo gastronomic exploration!
Oh yeh... and we also sank six bottles of wine in Newcastle harbour for three months to see how they would taste after a bit of underwater aging...
Where can people find it and can they buy tickets before hand?
People can get tickets by searching What's In Your Glass? into Google, or heading to hunterwhatsinyourglass.wordpress.com. Early discount 'Bud Burst' ticktes are $35 until September 1st, then standard GA 'Harvest' tickets are $45. Plus, if there's any left as tickets are limited, you can buy tickets to the pre-fair, sunken wine tasting experience, where you can taste the aged sunken wines with us and the winegrowers themselves!
When did you begin your fascination with wine?
Probably at uni. We used to hide goon sacks around town so that we'd have something to drink between places... Then I moved to London and started working in a wine bar over there. It was amazing, having access to so many incredible and diverse wines from all over Europe. I went to to wine event called Real Wine Fair, and tasted a glass of Aussie wine that I will never forget (because it melted synapses in my brain), and I've been tumbling down the beautiful black hole of wine, ever since..
Why an event? What else will people get out of attending other than drinking one of the nectars of the gods?
The event is a chance for Novocastrians to experience really delicious booze, food, and music, here, in Newcastle, and in a very relaxed setting without having to drive down to Sydney... Andrew and I reckon Newcastle is a pretty amazing place to live, with so much culture and hidden potential, and we just want to contribute to the positive energy that's flowing around this place, by pouring some wine for people.
Anything else Novocastrians should know?
