This That, and a bit more / by Kian West

You might just be able to remember that last weekend Newcastle had a festival, well, actually it had two, but I’m only interested in This one, or is it That one?

I was one of the lucky 12,000 people that attended last Saturday along Newcastle Foreshore to This That Festival, a really well organized and attended event.

Honestly, I’m really impressed with what the team behind This That have delivered, really showcasing some incredible musical talent in an environment that seems to get the changed needs of a festival attendee, complete with lush VIP section, huge boutique food offering, the ever classic rides and some quirky things going on to keep you interested.

I could go on and on about the highlights, from local heroes RAAVE TAPES, Drapht, Elliphant, and especially the duo bringing it home Peking Duk. But if you were there, you knew how great they were and if you weren’t, well, better come next year.

What I will say is, I spotted a mainstream media channel article about the event that seemed to indicate that the small amount of trouble regarding drugs and incidents (less than 150 patrons / 12,000 attendees) was a huge deal and that the festival shouldn’t progress in 2017.

Seriously? Why do we allow such negative viewpoints to be the media we digest? Why do we allow a tiny fraction of people doing the wrong thing dictate the opportunities for a whole community. How do we change the behaviours of a minority and at the same time the behaviours of journalism to be more optimistic and aware of how they frame the conversation for a whole community. As a community, how about we call out both behaviours! How about we help people like the ones that created THIS THAT to expand the greatness. I'm on the warpath against people who want things to stop instead of more stuff happening, against negative talk, against all this garbage that somehow made people think that they have to agree with everything or it shouldn't happen. You live in a community with other people and so you, like I, must all accept that sometimes things will happen that we aren't interested in.

Shout out to THIS THAT and shout out to all of you doing the right thing!
