nm_web_images_6How did The Newcastle Candle Co begin? At school in mid-2013, we were presented with a challenge of creating a ‘business in a box’. Being judged by a certain criteria, the winner was awarded $250 to put towards their business idea. I didn’t win that competition, but I was inundated by an overwhelming response to my candles, which encouraged me to further develop The Newcastle Candle Co as a business.

How would you describe the products you create? From mixing scents and pouring wax, to hand-typing labels on my trusty typewriter, each candle I sell has been hand-made by me, making each one special and unique from the next. Each candle is made using natural soy-wax, a biodegradable and renewable resource made from soybeans, and is poured into an amber glass jar which has plenty of reuse and recycle opportunities after the candles life comes to an end.

Explain the masculine candle movement: Firstly, 35% of candle users are men. Candles provide warmth, relaxation and good memories, and men want that too. The discovery of controlled fire is one of the greatest human discoveries and for thousands of years, until the early 1900’s, candles have been the only artificial source of light. Though in recent years, candle companies have left men behind- but don’t worry; I’ve got it covered.

What are you working on at the moment? I am always working on new concepts for scents and design, and have just finished developing 2 fresh scents to add to the line, these masculine scents are Cedar & Caramel, and one I am yet to name which compromises a mix of lemon, coffee, cardamom, patchouli and amber- Both of these candles will be right at home in any man cave.

Where are your products available? I sell my products online at newcastlecandleco.bigcartel.com, and I am happy for customers to have their candles picked-up or delivered. Though follow us on Facebook to keep up to date with our whereabouts for when we do get out to markets, events and stores in the Newcastle area.

When are you most creative?nm_web_images_5 My creativity peaks whenever I get quiet time to myself, which is unfortunately at about midnight every night. As soon as my head hits the pillow, I get flooded with ideas that I either write-down or lose, so I suggest always keeping a pen and notepad next to your bed.

If you could work anywhere where would it be? A studio apartment or an old warehouse with a loft, somewhere cosy that I can make my own. As long as it’s in Newcastle, I’m a happy man.
