Top 5 Gigs to go to this week, by Brooke Tunbridge / by Brooke Tunbridge

There is so much on this week, this was insanely difficult to cull to only five gigs. I’ll give those I left out a mention because I think they’re all worth going to.

Anyway, here’s my picks for the top 5 gigs to go to this week:

Rachel Maria Cox w/ Zen Haircuts + Shysters + Marlon Bando
Rachel Maria Cox are on tour, having already visited Melbourne, they’re back for Newcastle, then setting off to a house show in Wollongong, followed by Adelaide. They’re headlining a midweek free show at the Hamo. Get there.

When: Wednesday 19th April
Where: Hamilton Station Hotel
Tickets: Free entry

zappo

Zappo w/ The Dershwins + Southern End + Toytown + CHIMERA
Zappo have been busy creating their album and it’s now ready for the world to hear. Zappo’s Rainbow Daze album launch will be held at the cosy all-age venue The Commons and they’ve lined up an impressive list of guests with “plenty [of] surprises”.

When: Friday 21st April
Where: The Commons
Tickets: $5 at the door

Los Scallywaggs w/ Crocodylus + Pist Idiots
These guys are insane and you need to see their live show to believe it, or maybe you already believe me. Either way, they put on a good show. Don’t miss this.

When: Friday 21st April
Where: Lass O’Gowrie Hotel
Tickets: Free entry

the gum ball

The 12th Annual Gum Ball Music Festival
Kim Churchill, Boo Seeka, Felix Riebl (The Cat Empire), Regurgitator and loads more on the line-up. It’s a camping festival, BYO, family friendly, one artist at a time on the main stage so there won’t be any clashes. By the looks of it there’s always something on to keep you entertained.

When: Friday 21st – Sunday 23rd
Where: Dashville- 103 Kirkton Road, Belford NSW
Tickets: Find tickets here

Nadia Reid w/ Ben Leece + De’May
Kiwi folk act Nadia Reid is kindly visiting Australia and putting on a free show at The Edwards with local supports.

When: Friday 21st April
Where: The Edwards
Tickets: Free entry

Other gigs worth mentioning: Bob Evans @ Lizottes, THE GOOD OIL: The Pink Tiles w/ Rhysics + Zappo @ The Edwards, King Single w/ Jen Buxton & The Slaughterhouse Five + Antonia & The Lazy Susans @ The Cambridge Hotel, Stranger Than Friends (FKA Big Chief and The Bottle Openers) w/ Altai + Sister Rosicky + GOVV @ The Cambridge Hotel, Feffy w/ Daniel Foster + Joey Geyer acoustic session @ Hamilton Station Hotel.

This weekend (Saturday 22nd April) also happens to be Record Store Day, which I had to include, so here’s what’s happening across Newcastle that day:

rsd

The Edwards Shop have over 3,000 records in stock across 7”s, 10”s, and 12”s. Plus, hand-selected CDs, DVDs, Books, Art, and local cassette tapes.

They’ll have a free sausage sizzle provided by The Edwards, vintage clothes stall provided by Very Vintage, and live music by Spencer Scott, Boots Porter, and more!

Abicus will have exclusive Record Store Day titles including The War On Drugs, Stevie Nicks, The Smiths, Pearl Jam, The Flaming Lips, The Kinks, The Ramones and a Stranger Things inspired RSD “Vinyl Is Forever” tee. More will be announced this week.

Let us know if there’s anything else going down on Record Store Day that we should know about!
